EVANSVILLE 鈥 only comes once a year and it usually involves free treats for customers at many shops, but it started as recognition of service from the Salvation Army.

This year it will be celebrated Friday, June 7.

According to the Salvation Army, National Donut Day started in 1938 in Chicago. It commemorated the Salvation Army's Donut Lassies, women who were sent to France in 1917 to set up bases near the front lines of the war.

"In makeshift huts, thousands of soldiers would come to stock up on essential goods and grab a sweet treat baked by the Lassies," the Salvation Army site states.

There's even a for the same donuts served when the Donut Lassies first started. But if celebrating the day by baking isn't your style, there's multiple options locally to pick up a treat.
