Evansville man faces 39 charges from two counties in connection with timber theft

POSEY COUNTY, Ind.聽鈥 An Evansville man faces a number of charges after he reportedly failed to pay for $250,000 in timber purchased over a two-year period.

Christopher L. Collins, 40, of Evansville, is being held in the Posey County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond after being arrested by聽Indiana Conservation Officers Nov. 20.

This is what happened, according to a release from Department of Natural Resources:

Conservation officers identified 17 victims in Gibson and Posey counties who have not received payment for their timber per agreements going back as far as 2018.

Conservation officers began their investigation in 2019 after receiving information that Collins had failed to pay for timber as agreed in Gibson County. The investigation found聽Collins failed to pay more than $250,000 for timber he purchased over a two-year period.

Investigators also discovered Collins had operated under the following business names: C&K Forestry Management LLC, C&K Forestry LLC, C&M Forestry LLC, Blackhaus Forestry LLC聽and Collins Family Forestry.

In August,聽conservation officers executed arrest and search warrants on Collins at his home聽for violations that occurred in Gibson County. Evidence and information gained from those warrants led to the discovery of additional alleged victims.

Gibson County:

  • One count聽 of Corrupt Business Influence, Level 5 Felony
  • Five counts of Theft, Level 6 Felony
  • Two聽counts of聽Check Deception,聽Level 6 Felony
  • Five counts of聽Failure to Pay for Timber as Agreed, Class A Misdemeanor

Posey County:

  • One count of Corrupt Business Influence,聽Level 5 Felony
  • Nine counts of聽Theft,聽Level 6 Felony
  • Three counts of聽Check Deception,聽Level 6 Felony
  • Eleven separate counts of聽Failure to Pay for Timber as Agreed,聽Class A Misdemeanor
  • One count of聽Unlicensed Timber Buyer,聽Class A Misdemeanor
